Guys, can't hide that I ever, ever loved Chelsea Grin: also when the majority of the audience has emitted a vote bordering zero (references to the ''Evolve'' EP purely casuals) I managed to appreciate them, and in this review I will explain the motivations of my ''choice''.
In this new ''Ashes to Ashes'' you can appraise what I'm going to emphasize now, that is this mix of synth with the classic viciousness of the band fully proposed by the booming guitars and a rhythm section simply impressive, with a drummer that propose a really high-level work, perfectly contributing to the success of it all. The most heavy criticism directed to this band and above all to the incoming album is the same that you can read in all the deathcore albums reviews since 2013, i.e. The banality of the deadening routine of breakdowns that swoop in almost every song of almost every band of the genre. Indeed in this album there are many, I can't deny it, but the American sextet has been able to use them in a diligent way, giving a new definition and a new circle of use to this ''technique''. Chelsea Grin didn't want to make the usual deathcore album only capable of fillig the listener's ears with pure musical violence, they wanted to create a very personal atmposphere, that could had made them recognizable after a single listen from everyone like Oceano with their last work ''Incisions''(the thing is, they aimed to the more violent ambiance that typifies them). And I must say they made it pretty good. The introduction and the abundace in the use of the synths has been able of creating a really innovative sound that really impressed me, (like in the trak ''Illuminated'', that surprised me). I've alredy talked about the guitar-work and the rhytmic section, now it's time to properly speak about the vocalist Alex Koehler, that without doubts with his various and strong vocal tone fits in the list of my favourite singers of the genre with Adam Warren of the above-mentioned Oceano and Scott Lewis of Carnifex.
So, all of this has been capable to create a real atmosphere, sometimes nice, other ''painful' that locked me in my bedroom with the earphones on for all the duration of the album, for the first time I stayed for an hour surrounded by the sounds of these songs, and I didn't need anything else.
I would like to refer only for a second on the last thing, that is the production of this album. I really think that this CD is one of the best ever made under this point of view. What had to be emphasized has been perfectly putted in rise and highlighted with sounds that are really devastating. I know that you readers wouldn't agree with the vote I'm going to give to this album I can do no other, because in this work I've seen no errors, the atmosphere created by this album really excited me and I've never felt something like this listening to a Deathcore record has been always limitated to principles of pure violence.
So in the end I hope you would appreciate this album as I did and that you wouldn't be stopped by what apparency brings along. [Translated by Alberto Mugetti]
Ragazzi non posso nascondervi che io ho sempre amato i Chelsea Grin; anche dove la maggior
parte dell'audience ha emesso un voto che rasenta lo zero (riferimenti all'EP Evolve puramente casuali) io sono riuscito ad apprezzarli, e con questa recensione vi spiegherò
il perchè di questa mia "scelta".
In questo nuovo "Ashes to Ashes" si apprezza al meglio ciò che sto per sottolinearvi, ovvero questa mescolanza di synth con la classica cattiveria del gruppo espressa a pieno regime dalle chitarre tuonanti e da un comparto ritmico semplicemente mostruoso, con un batterista che propone davvero un lavoro di alto livello contribuendo perfettamente alla riuscita del tutto.La critica più pesante mossa verso questo gruppo e soprattutto questo disco in uscita è la solita che sentite in ogni recensione di deathcore dal 2013 ad oggi, ovvero la banalità dei breakdown che irrompono in quasi ogni canzone di quasi ogni gruppo del genere.
L'introduzione e l'abbondanza dell'uso dei synth è stata capace di creare un sound davvero innovativo e che davvero mi ha sorpreso, (come nella traccia "Illuminate" che reputo la mia preferita).
Sul guitar work e sul comparto ritmico mi sono già espresso, ora però è il momento di parlare
giustamente di Alex Koehler, il vocalist della band, che senza dubbio con la sua timbrica
sempre varia e possente rientra nella lista dei miei cantanti preferiti del genere assieme ad Adam Warren dei già citati Oceano e a Scott Lewis dei Carnifex.
Tutto ciò quindi è stato capace di creare una vera e propria atmosfera a tratti piacevole e a tratti invece "dolorosa" che mi ha rinchiuso in camera con le cuffie per tutta la durata del disco, cioè per la prima volta io sono stato per un'ora intera sul letto ad ascoltare questo disco senza fare altro, perchè mi bastava essere letteralmente circondato dai suoni di questo disco.
Vorrei soffermarmi un secondo su un'ultima cosa, ovvero la produzione di questo disco. Credo davvero che questo disco sia uno di quelli meglio riusciti da questo punto di vista.
Ciò che andava enfatizzato è stato perfettamente messo in rilievo e sottolineato con
dei suoni davvero spaventosi. So che a voi lettori non sarete d'accordo con il voto che io sto per dare a questo disco ma non posso fare altrimenti perchè io difetti in questo lavoro non ne ho trovati, l'atmosfera creata da questo disco mi ha davvero entusiasmato e mai ho provato la cosa simile
ascoltando un disco che dovrebbe appartenere a un genere come il Deathcore che si è sempre limitato alla pura e dedicata violenza.
Quindi in conclusione spero che apprezziate come me questo disco e non vi soffermiate solo
a ciò che l'apparenza vi porta.
