They stared their activity in 1990 and since then they have released a lot of demos and a few fair full-lenght CDs like their last one, "Feeding The Crawling Shadows".
I totally liked this album! Raw, fast, melodic, in a few words... it's finnish black metal! And that's also album's weak point.
This CD follows genre's musical line that made famous this album, but also band like Satanic Warmaster and Horna. There's nothing original.
Obviously some of you can't do nothing but enjoy it, even if there's that "I think I've already listen to something like this..." feeling. In fact, during the listening, you couldn't tell the difference between the tracks, because they all sound the same. It seems like the riffs are always the same, modified and re-used again and again. But one of the biggest band's disadvantages is their self-improvement: in fact, there is none. Since their firs release they didn't gey any worse nor better, they just followed their path, sadly becoming boring and repetitive, and this last work is a proof. Maybe, their unique improvement is the recording: not too raw and neither too clean, getting to that middle-way which new blacksters could enjoy because of the nice melodies, that are also - I repeat it - monotonous.
There's nothing more to say and I don't think there would be: this is the album as they produced it. While you're listening to it you could get bother, but on the other hand you'll find that it is exactly what the band have always played. Of course, this does not make it a better album. Era da un po’ che si sentiva la mancanza di un disco Black Metal Finlandese e in questo 2014 i Sargeist hanno risolto il problema con il loro nuovo album.
In attività dal 1999, il gruppo ha continuato a sfornare moltissime demo e qualche full-lenght dalla discreta qualità, fino ad arrivare, appunto, a quest’ultimo “Feeding the Crawling Shadows”.
Questo album ha soddisfatto in pieno le mie aspettative: è grezzo, melodico, veloce, insomma … è Black Metal Finlandese! E forse è proprio qui che sta il difetto dell’intero disco.
L’opera infatti rispetta per filo e per segno tutti i canoni del genere che hanno reso famoso il gruppo in questione, ma anche altre band come i Satanic Warmaster e gli Horna. Non c’è nessun elemento veramente originale.
Chiaramente ad alcune persone non può fare altro che piacere, se non fosse per quella sensazione di “già sentito” che si ha ascoltando tutto il disco. Infatti durante l’ascolto del lavoro in questione non percepivo nemmeno il passaggio da una traccia all’altra, poiché i riff sembrano sempre gli stessi, riciclati e riutilizzati fino alla nausea. Ma uno dei più grandi difetti di questa band è il fattore "self improvement" , del tutto inesistente. Infatti dalla loro prima demo i Sargeist non sono mai né migliorati né peggiorati, si sono sempre tenuti sulla stessa lunghezza d’onda, diventando però molto ripetitivi e quest’ultimo lavoro ne è la prova. Forse l’unica cosa in cui sono effettivamente migliorati è la registrazione che non risulta né troppo sporca né troppo pulita, arrivando a quella via di mezzo che può far piacere ai blackster neofiti anche grazie alle melodie orecchiabili ma comunque ripetitive.
Insomma, non credo ci sia bisogno di dilungarsi più di tanto in questa recensione, poiché il disco va semplicemente preso per quello che è. Può causare noia, sbadigli e rottura di coglioni, ma nonostante questo l’opera è rimasta fedele e coerente a quello che il gruppo ha da sempre suonato, ma ciò ovviamente non basta a renderlo un album migliore.
