Beneth are another brutal UL targeted band, that after their first album "Enslaved by Fear", which had been appreciated from the critic and also judged one of the best technical brutal album by these last years, come out with "The Barren Throne", their new album.
First thing I have noticed is the album lenght: 10 minutes longer than thier first album, so it's osbviously that these guys have more stuff to propose us, or, at least, that is what I thought. Then there's a thing that worryied me: always speaking of the album's lenght, it is more that 50 minutes! Okay, I know that is a technical and has more influences, but 50 minutes for a brutal album is way too much. Whatever.But, anyway, nevermind the shit that was in my head; I pushed the "Listen" button and I listened to it so many times, more than I expected.
"The Barren Throne" is full of influences and stuff from band like Hate Eternal and Suffocation.
Forget the lenght before you decide to listen to it and enjoy every riff, arpeggio, change, bridge and new vocalist Benedikt Natanael's voice and you'll find out that 50minutes are not that big problem.Though, even if the album is indeed a good work, it's not good enough to catch you with every single note during its lenght; because, like every other album with a long-play that is way too much, there are only a few songs that really worth something, while the rest is nothing special. Just take a look to this three songs: "Depleted Kingdom", "Chalice" and the title track, then the slow and aching "Sky Burial" which reveals album's progressive side and the next "Veil of Mercy", a classical hymn to destruction.
Okay, and then? Then a lot of boring minutes, flaw songs to NOT play live... in a few words, fillers than only ruin what is good in this work.
In the end, I'm surprised because they did a great job, but I'm also disappointed. Given that their first album was great and they have a new vocalist, these guys should have followed a secure and well-known path, instead of trying these awful solutions. "The Barren Throne" is a CD that dares too much, that achieve what it wants but forgets its final goal and for what it was made for. [Translated by Lorenzo Naturale]
Ennesima uscita Unique Leader che mi trovo ad analizzare, fin'ora è andata anche troppo bene per quanto riguarda il materiale di questa label, ma questa volta qualcosa mi dice che non andrà poi così bene...o mi sbaglio?
I Beneath sono l'ennesima band brutal targata UL, che dopo aver esordito con il primo full length "Enslaved By Fear", il quale, nota bene, fu accolto molto positivamente dalla critica nonché giudicato come uno dei migliori album technical brutal degli ultimi anni, riemerge due anni dopo con questo "The Barren Throne".
Come primissima cosa (almeno, io c'ho fatto subito caso), notiamo una differenza di durata di circa 10 minuti in più rispetto al precedente capitolo, scontato dire che i nostri avranno senza dubbio ancora più materiale nuovo da presentarci, o almeno è quello che ho subito pensato. Parlando sempre della durata, devo dire che un disco brutal, ok sarà technical e avrà anche altre influenze, ma sempre brutal rimane, che duri oltre 50 minuti, è preoccupante e non poco.
Ma lasciando stare le diverse seghe mentali che mi tormentavano, misi play e me lo sentii tutto d'un fiato diverse volte, forse anche più volte di quante immaginassi bastassero per comprenderlo a pieno.
"The Barren Throne" si rivela un minestrone pieno zeppo di rimandi a band come Suffocation, Hate Eternal.
Prima di sentirlo dimenticate la durata e godetevi ogni passaggio, ogni cambio, ogni riff, ogni arpeggio in clean ed ogni ringhiata del nuovo vocalist Benedikt Natanael e vedrete che quei oltre 50 minuti non saranno più un grosso problema.
Nonostante ciò ,però, il disco, sì che risulta piacevole tutto sommato visti i molteplici momenti catchy, ma non in modo tale da imprigionarti nel suo prolungato divenire; questo perché, come rischiano di essere i dischi da durate sopra la media, si tiene da solo grazie ad alcuni episodi che spiccano vistosamente rispetto ad altre.
Vedi la tripletta "Depleted Kingdom", "Chalice" e la title track, la lenta e straziante ma allo stesso tempo stupenda "Sky Burial" che tira fuori il lato progressive più nascosto del cd e la successiva " Veil Of Mercy", tipico pezzone dove gli islandesi non esitano ad invocare alla distruzione.
Ok e poi? E poi tanti altri minuti fiacchi, ripetitivi che costituiscono tracce poco convinte, canzoni da NON riproporre live...insomma diciamolo, dei fillers che rovinano in parte quanto fin qui detto o meglio quanto detto dai singoloni.
Per cui, se per alcuni aspetti son rimasto sorpreso da questa ultima fatica degli islandesi, da altri sono praticamente a metà tra il deluso e il come mi trovavo all'inizio, prima di ascoltarlo.
Visto il successo del precedente disco e visto l'inserimento del nuovo vocalist, i nostri avrebbero fatto meglio a rimanere coi piedi per terra, anziché cercare soluzioni poco affidabili.
In conclusione, "The Barren Throne" è un disco che osa troppo, che raggiunge quello che vuole ma che lo supera fino a lasciarselo alle spalle dimenticando quasi del tutto per cosa è stato creato.
