It's nice too see that a lot of bands, recently, do not give a fuck about labels and decide to be indipendent under every aspect. It is so nice because, when a band produces its own album, a lot of times the result will be only one: A GREAT EPIC ALBUM.
Son of Aurelios did so and released "Under a Western sun", an amazing CD. One of year's best album (and to me a masterpiece), this CD has a modus operandis in the compositions that is very classic but at the same time modern, and the result is a progressive death metal release rafined and great.
For those who aren't new to the genre, the name "Son of Aurelios" is well known. Their 1st album, "The Farthest Reaches", had success but their new album (musically speaking) is so different from the first. It seems like the band studied music all the time, improved their skills, and knew since the beginning what they wanted to release.
"Son of Aurelios" are great in everything: solos, vocals, arrangiaments. Album is filled with a classical musical touch and it is pointless to talk about the which is best tracks, because they're all great. Though, we have to say that the album is very long: 72 minutes. It isn't an easy-listening album but this is not gonna change the fact that it is epic. Every track is a different universe rich of particulars that you won't notice at the beginning, but that you'll like every time you press the "play" button.
It also almost perfect. Almost, because in its classical touch, it could be musically linked with other bands such as Cynic and Death, and so the album proposes us nothing new. But this will be solved in the next albums, I tell you.
"Under a Western Sun" could be understimated and not get the glory it deserves, so while you're reading this you have no exscuses: listen to this album, appreciate it, listen to it again and again and, most important thing of all, between all the shit-core in the web, listen again to "Under a Western Sun" so you can remember how true music sounds. E’ bellissimo vedere come ultimamente sempre più band se ne sbattino delle case discografiche e decidano di essere indipendenti sotto ogni punto di vista. E’ bellissimo perché, quando una band produce un album con le propie mani, nella maggior parte dei casi il risultato è uno solo: DISCONE.
E questo è il caso dei Son Of Aurelius che, in maniera indipendente, sfornano “Under A Western Sun”, un disco magnifico. Indubbiamente già uno dei dischi dell’anno (e per me un capolavoro), l’album è un’opera monumentale di progressive metal di fattura pregiatissima e raffinata, con un modus operandi nelle composizioni molto classico ma al contempo moderno.
Per i Nerd del Technical Death metal, il nome “Son Of Aurelius”, quasi sicuramente non è sconosciuto. Il loro debut infatti “The Farthest Reaches” creò un’ottima nomina sulla band ma, il nuovo album (musicalmente parlando) è completamente distaccato dal primo. Sembra infatti che in questi anni la band si sia chiusa in conservatorio,che abbia affinato le propie abilità e che ne sia uscita gloriosa e soprattutto consapevole di incidere quello che aveva ben preciso in mente.
I Son Of Aurelius sono formidabili sotto ogni punto di vista: arrangiamenti, assoli e le linee vocali sono a dir poco sbalorditive. L’album è pervaso da un gusto musicale classico come non lo si sentiva da anni ed è inutile segnalare tracce degne di nota perché tutto l’album è musicalmente brillante. E’ da segnalare però la pesantezza dell’’album: nei suoi quasi 72 minuti di durata, ”Under a Western Sun” non è di certo un album dall’ascolto semplice ma credetemi, questa durata non inficia minimamente sul giudizio finale dell’album. Ogni traccia infatti è un universo a se stante ricco di sfumature impercettibili ad un primo ascolto che però dona piacere ad ogni qual volta il tasto play viene premuto.
Nel suo essere un album praticamente perfetto, ”Under A Western Sun” contiene un piccolissimo difetto che non lo rende, oggettivamente, un capolavoro: nella sua classicità infatti, l’album è musicalmente ricollegabile all’operato di band del calibro dei Cynic e Death, non creando quindi nulla di nuovo. Ma questo difetto con i prossimi album svanirà di sicuro, statene certi.
“Under A Western Sun” è un album che rischia di passare inosservato e questo non deve assolutamente accadere e leggendo queste righe non avete scuse: fatelo vostro,divoratelo, consumatelo e dopodiché fatelo di nuovo e, cosa più importante, ogni tanto in mezzo alla merda core che pervade il web, ascoltate questo album spettacolare per ricordare a voi stessi come si fa vera musica.Vi prego.
