Opeth have become esoteric, airtight and accessible only for “Music Nerds”. But, If this is what they want, in this new album, "Pale Communion", there is everything to achieve this goal.
Unfortunately, shortest songs are also the worst tracks on the album, in my opinion. For example, “ Goblin” and “ Elysian Woes” are composed by calm rhythms that don't explode but that is not even open to something airy and catchy. The perfect compromise is reached on “Cusp Of Eternity” where all the elements are fused in the best way possible to create a good refined single, definitely above the average. In the middle there is the semi-acoustic “River” which in its 7 and a half minutes rattles well what It is now a classic Opeth setlist, the acoustic medley. That surely accompanies many moments. But You have to wait until the penultimate track "Voice Of Treason" to savor a vague taste of immediacy. “Moon Above, Sun Below” won the award for “Best Song.” If only lasted less, maybe it would be perfect. His 10 minutes are justified only for a part. Why? This song is a riot of epic moments! Although ... leaving 3-4 minutes of silence and two intro avoidable we would had in our hands a track even better than Cusp, but, really, we don't have it! People have mentioned the influence of Storm Corrosion in the compositional process of this CD, especially for several orchestral sample and for the intro of "Faith In Others". How to blame them?
With a little patience this new Opeth's album proves to be classy and straightforward. Yo may not like it, but the acme of compositional Akerfledt, also this time, outperforms (and close to) the rivalry.
Paradossalmente le tracce più brevi sono quelle a mio modo di vedere elaborate peggio, sia "Goblin" che "Elysian Woes" soffrono di ritmi pacati che non esplodono ma che nemmeno si aprono a qualcosa di arioso e più assimilabile. Il perfetto compromesso si raggiunge su "Cusp Of Eternity" dove tutti gli elementi vengono fusi nella maniera migliore possibile per creare un buon singolo con una raffinatezza sopra la media. Bisogna aspettare la penultima traccia "Voice Of Treason" per riassaporare un vago sapore di immediatezza. Nel mezzo ci sta la semiacustica "River" che nei suoi 7 minuti e mezzo snocciola bene quello che è oramai un classico delle setlist degli Opeth, ovvero il medley acustico, che con questo album verrà sicuramente infoltito di momenti.
In molti poi hanno citato l'influenza degli Storm Corrosion nel processo compositivo di questo cd, questo è vero sopratutto per diversi sample orchestrali e per l'intro di "Faith In Others".
Ultima ad essere menzionata ma non per minore importanza è "Moon Above, Sun Below" che si aggiudica il premio di "migliore canzone se fosse durata la metà". I suoi 10 minuti sono giustificati solo in parte, se si fosse fatto un riassunto dei momenti più epici tralasciando 3-4 minuti tra silenzio e due intro evitabili avremmo avuto tra le mani una traccia anche migliore di Cusp, ma non ce l'abbiamo.
Con un po' di pazienza questo nuovo cd degli Opeth si rivela un album di classe, abbastanza diretto in certi punti, elegante e pienamente ispirato. Potrà non piacervi ma l'acme compositivo di Akerfledt anche questa volta in diversi tratti surclassa e di molto la concorrenza.
